如是我聞:一時佛在舍衛國 祇樹給孤獨園


爾時眾多比丘食時已到著衣持鉢,入城乞食。時諸比丘聞釋子象首比丘在於城內遇病命終。食訖迴還,往至佛所,禮佛足已,在一面坐,白佛言:

「世尊!我等比丘晨朝著衣持鉢,入城乞食,聞象首比丘其命已終。唯願世尊為我解說,象首比丘為生何處,受何果報!」

佛告諸比丘:

「夫能增長三非法者,身壞命終,必墮地獄。云何名為三種非法?所謂增長慳貪、愚癡、瞋恚。今此比丘犯三非法。比丘!當知墮於地獄。 」

爾時世尊即說偈言:

若生不善心    成就貪瞋癡
此身自作惡    還復害於己
如芭蕉生實    自害於其身
若無貪瞋癡    是名為智慧
不害於己身    是名勝丈夫
是以應除斷    貪瞋癡大患


時諸比丘聞佛所說,歡喜奉行。

Monk “Elephant-head”

Translation of BZA 004. First version published in Buddhist Studies Review vol. 23-1 (2006).

Thus have I heard, once, the Buddha was staying at Sāvatthī at the Jeta Grove in the Anāthapiṇḍika Park. At that time, when the hour to go on almsround had come, a number of monks took their robes and begging bowls and entered the town to beg for food. There the monks heard that the monk ‘Elephant-head’ , a member of the Sakyā clan, had fallen ill in the town and died. Having finished their meals they returned, went to the Buddha, paid homage to his feet and sat to one side. They told the Buddha: ‘World-honored One, this morning we took our robes and begging bowls and entered the town to beg for food. There we heard that the monk ‘Elephant-head’ had died. We now wish the World-honored One would explain to us where the monk ‘Elephant-head’ will be reborn, what karmic fruit he will obtain?’.

The Buddha said to the monks: ‘Those that cause to increase the three negative factors, must, after the body fails and life comes to an end, fall into hell. What are the three negative factors? They are known as the increase of greed, of ignorance and of hate. Now this monk has committed the increase of the three negative factors. Understand, you monks, that he will fall into hell’.

At that time the Buddha spoke this verse:

If one gives rise to an unwholesome mind / effecting greed, ignorance and anger,//
does evil with one’s body / one will harm oneself,//
like the banana plant when bearing fruit / harms its own body//
The absence of greed, anger and ignorance / is called wisdom.//
Those who do not harm their own bodies / are called victors.//
By this one should cut off / the great suffering of greed, anger, and ignorance.//

There the monks, having listened to what the Buddha had said, were happy and practised accordingly.

如是我聞:一時佛住舍衛國 祇樹給孤獨園


爾時舍衛國有比丘,是釋氏子,在舍衛國命終。時有眾多比丘,晨朝著衣持鉢,入舍衛城乞食,聞手比丘──釋子──於舍衛國命終。聞已,入舍衛城。乞食還,舉衣鉢,洗足畢,詣佛所,稽首佛足,退坐一面,白佛言:

「世尊!今日晨朝眾多比丘著衣持鉢,入舍衛城乞食,聞釋氏子手比丘於舍衛國命終。云何──世尊!──手比丘命終,當生何處?云何受生,後世云何?」

佛告諸比丘:

「是手比丘成就三不善法。彼命終當生惡趣泥犁中。何等三不善法?謂貪欲、瞋恚、愚癡。此三不善法結縛於心,釋種子手比丘生惡趣泥犁中。」

爾時世尊即說偈言:

貪欲瞋恚癡    結縛士夫心
內發還自傷    猶如竹蘆實
無貪恚癡心    是說為黠慧
內發不自傷    是名為勝出
是故當離貪    瞋恚癡冥心
比丘智慧明    苦盡般涅槃


佛說此經已,諸比丘聞佛所說,歡喜奉行。
