爾時世尊與千二百五十大比丘僧、千優婆塞、五百乞兒而自圍遶,遊行摩竭提國,從一聚落至一聚落,從城至城,(……乃至)到彼那羅健陀城 * 疊園林,於中止住。


時閉口姓聚落主是尼乾陀弟子,聞佛在摩竭提遊,乃至是中到此園林,作是念言:

「我當往白師尼乾陀,然後往詣瞿曇邊。」

時閉口姓即往尼乾陀所,頂禮其足,在一面坐。時尼乾陀即告之言:

「汝能以二種論難瞿曇不?如兩 * 鍓鉤, * 鉤取於魚,既不得吐,又不得 * 嚥。斯二種論亦復如是,能令於彼不得吐、 * 嚥。」

聚落主言:

「唯願教我,我當往問。何等二論,能令瞿曇不得吐、 * 嚥?」

尼乾陀言:

「汝詣彼所,如我辭曰:汝今瞿曇頗欲利益諸家不?若不利益,與諸凡愚有何差別?若言利益,汝今云何將千二百比丘、千優婆塞、五百乞兒從一聚落至一聚落,從城至城,破壞諸家?所經之處,為汝踐蹈、摧壞、傷毀。如雹害禾,是名破壞,非為利益!」

爾時閉口受其教已,詣賣 * 疊林,往 * 詣佛所,粗相問訊,在一面坐,即白佛言:

「瞿曇!汝今寧可不欲增長利益於諸家耶?汝豈不常讚嘆增長利益者乎?」

佛告之曰:

「我於長夜恒欲增長利益之法。」

時聚落主而作是言:

「汝若利益,何故今者於飢饉世與千二百比丘、千優婆塞、五百乞兒俱從一聚落至一聚落,從城至城,破壞諸家?斯非增長利益之法!所為損減,如雹害禾。汝壞人民,亦復如是。」

佛告之曰:

「我憶九十一劫已來無有一家以熟食施而致損減。汝今且觀一切諸家多饒財寶,眷屬僮僕,象、馬、牛、羊是富基業。有不從施而得者,不盡從施。我獲斯果報,有八因緣,能壞諸家。若為王賊所侵,為火所燒,大水所漂,失所伏藏,生於惡子,不解生業,威逼用財。惡子無理,用於財貨。一切世人皆云:八事能破居家。我今更說第九之破。言第九者,所謂無常。離是九種,外言沙門瞿曇能破諸家,無有是處。若棄如是九種因緣,言沙門瞿曇能破諸家,不增長者,無有是處。不捨是語,不捨是欲。如斯等人,猶如拍毱,必墮地獄。」

時閉口姓聚落主聞是語已,必生驚怖,憂惱厭惡,身毛為竪,起禮佛足,歸命於佛,而作是言:

「我今誠心向佛懺悔!我甚愚癡,猶如 * 孾兒,所作不善。今於佛前虛妄不實,下賤妄語。唯願哀愍,聽我懺悔!」

佛告之曰:

「知汝至心。汝實知罪,實 * 知愚癡,猶如 * 孾兒,所作不善。汝於如來.阿羅呵作大虛妄、鄙賤之業。今自知罪,誠心懺悔,善法增長,惡事退滅。我今愍汝,受汝懺悔,令汝善法增長,常不退失。」


時閉口姓聚落主聞佛所說,歡喜頂禮而去。

如是我聞:一時佛在摩竭提國人間遊行,與千二百五十比丘、千優婆塞、五百乞殘食人,從城至城,從聚落至聚落,人間遊行,至那羅聚落好衣菴羅園中。


時有刀師氏聚落主是尼揵弟子,詣尼揵所,禮尼揵足,退坐一面。 爾時尼揵語刀師氏聚落主:

「汝能共沙門瞿曇作蒺藜論,令沙門瞿曇不得語、不得不語耶?」

聚落主言:

「阿梨!我立何等論為蒺蔾論,令沙門瞿曇不得語、不得不語?」

尼揵語聚落主言:

「汝往詣沙門瞿曇所,作是問: 『瞿曇!常願欲令諸家福利具足增長,作如是願、如是說不?』 若答汝言『不』者,汝當問言: 『沙門瞿曇!與凡愚夫有何等異?』 若言『有願有說』者,當復問言: 『沙門瞿曇!若有如是願、如是說者,今云何於飢饉世,遊行人間,將諸大眾千二百五十比丘、千優婆塞、五百乞殘食人,從城至城,從村至村,費世間,如大雨雹,雨已,乃是減損,非增益也。瞿曇所說,殊不相應,不類不似,前後相違。』 如是,聚落主!是名蒺蔾論,令彼沙門瞿曇不得語、不得不語。」

爾時刀師氏聚落主受尼揵勸教已,詣佛所恭敬問訊,恭敬問訊已,退坐一面,白佛:

「瞿曇!常欲願令諸家福利增長不?」

佛告聚落主:

「如來長夜欲令諸家福利增長,亦常作是說。」

聚落主言:

「若如是者,云何,瞿曇!於飢饉世人間乞食,將諸大眾……乃至不似不類,前後相違?」

佛告聚落主:

「我憶九十一劫以來,不見一人施一比丘,有盡有減。聚落主!汝觀今日有人家大富,多錢財、多眷屬、多僕從,當知其家長夜好施,真實寂止,故致斯福利。聚落主!有八因緣,令人損減福利不增。何等為八?王所逼、賊所劫、火所焚、水所漂、藏自消減、抵債不還、怨憎殘破、惡子費用。有是八種為錢財難聚。聚落主!我說無常為第九句。如是,聚落主!汝捨九因九緣,而言『沙門瞿曇破壞他家』,不捨惡言、不捨惡見,如鐵槍投水,身壞命終,生地獄中。」

時刀師氏聚落主心生恐怖,身毛皆豎,白佛言:

「世尊!我今悔過!如愚如癡,不善不辯,於瞿曇所不實斯誑,虛說妄語。」


聞佛所說,歡喜隨喜,從座起去。

Kulasuttaṃ

Ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā kosalesu cārikaṃ caramāno mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṃ yena nāḷandā tadavasari Tatra sudaṃ bhagavā nāḷandāyaṃ viharati pāvārikambavane.

Tena kho pana samayena nāḷandā dubbhikkhā hoti dvīhitikā setaṭṭhikā salākāvuttā. Tena kho pana samayena nigaṇṭho nāṭaputto nāḷandāyaṃ paṭivasati mahatiyā nigaṇṭhaparisāya saddhiṃ. Atha kho asibandhakaputto gāmaṇi nigaṇṭhasāvako yena nigaṇṭho nāṭaputto tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā nigaṇṭhaṃ nāṭaputtaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinnaṃ kho asibandhakaputtaṃ gāmaṇiṃ nigaṇṭho nāṭaputto etadavoca– “ehi tvaṃ, gāmaṇi, samaṇassa gotamassa vādaṃ āropehi. Evaṃ te kalyāṇo kittisaddo abbhuggacchissati– ‘asibandhakaputtena gāmaṇinā samaṇassa gotamassa evaṃmahiddhikassa evaṃmahānubhāvassa vādo āropito”’ti.

“Kathaṃ panāhaṃ, bhante, samaṇassa gotamassa evaṃmahiddhikassa evaṃmahānubhāvassa vādaṃ āropessāmī”ti “Ehi tvaṃ, gāmaṇi, yena samaṇo gotamo tenupasaṅkama; upasaṅkamitvā samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ evaṃ vadehi– ‘nanu, bhante, bhagavā anekapariyāyena kulānaṃ anuddayaṃ [var] vaṇṇeti, anurakkhaṃ vaṇṇeti, anukampaṃ vaṇṇetī’ti? Sace kho, gāmaṇi, samaṇo gotamo evaṃ puṭṭho evaṃ byākaroti– ‘evaṃ, gāmaṇi, tathāgato anekapariyāyena kulānaṃ anuddayaṃ vaṇṇeti, anurakkhaṃ vaṇṇeti, anukampaṃ vaṇṇetī’ti, tamenaṃ tvaṃ evaṃ vadeyyāsi– ‘atha kiñcarahi, bhante, bhagavā dubbhikkhe dvīhitike setaṭṭhike salākāvutte mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṃ cārikaṃ carati? Ucchedāya bhagavā kulānaṃ paṭipanno, anayāya bhagavā kulānaṃ paṭipanno, upaghātāya bhagavā kulānaṃ paṭipanno’ti! Imaṃ kho te, gāmaṇi, samaṇo gotamo ubhatokoṭikaṃ pañhaṃ puṭṭho neva sakkhati [var] uggilituṃ, neva sakkhati ogilitun”ti. “Evaṃ bhante”ti kho asibandhakaputto gāmaṇi nigaṇṭhassa nāṭaputtassa paṭissutvā uṭṭhāyāsanā nigaṇṭhaṃ nāṭaputtaṃ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṃ katvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi.

Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho asibandhakaputto gāmaṇi bhagavantaṃ etadavoca– “Nanu, bhante, bhagavā anekapariyāyena kulānaṃ anuddayaṃ vaṇṇeti, anurakkhaṃ vaṇṇeti, anukampaṃ vaṇṇetī”ti? “Evaṃ, gāmaṇi, tathāgato anekapariyāyena kulānaṃ anuddayaṃ vaṇṇeti, anurakkhaṃ vaṇṇeti, anukampaṃ vaṇṇetī”ti. “Atha kiñcarahi, bhante, bhagavā dubbhikkhe dvīhitike setaṭṭhike salākāvutte mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṃ cārikaṃ carati? Ucchedāya bhagavā kulānaṃ paṭipanno, anayāya bhagavā kulānaṃ paṭipanno, upaghātāya bhagavā kulānaṃ paṭipanno”ti. “Ito so, gāmaṇi, ekanavutikappe [var] yamahaṃ anussarāmi, nābhijānāmi kiñci kulaṃ pakkabhikkhānuppadānamattena upahatapubbaṃ. Atha kho yāni tāni kulāni aḍḍhāni mahaddhanāni mahābhogāni pahūtajātarūparajatāni pahūtavittūpakaraṇāni pahūtadhanadhaññāni, sabbāni tāni dānasambhūtāni ceva saccasambhūtāni ca sāmaññasambhūtāni ca. Aṭṭha kho, gāmaṇi, hetū, aṭṭha paccayā kulānaṃ upaghātāya. Rājato vā kulāni upaghātaṃ gacchanti, corato vā kulāni upaghātaṃ gacchanti, aggito vā kulāni upaghātaṃ gacchanti udakato vā kulāni upaghātaṃ gacchanti, nihitaṃ vā ṭhānā vigacchati [var] , duppayuttā vā kammantā vipajjanti, kule vā kulaṅgāroti [var] uppajjati, yo te bhoge vikirati vidhamati viddhaṃseti, aniccatāye aṭṭhamīti.

Ime kho, gāmaṇi, aṭṭha hetū, aṭṭha paccayā kulānaṃ upaghātāya Imesu kho, gāmaṇi, aṭṭhasu hetūsu, aṭṭhasu paccayesu saṃvijjamānesu yo maṃ evaṃ vadeyya– ‘ucchedāya bhagavā kulānaṃ paṭipanno, anayāya bhagavā kulānaṃ paṭipanno, upaghātāya bhagavā kulānaṃ paṭipanno’ti, taṃ, gāmaṇi, vācaṃ appahāya taṃ cittaṃ appahāya taṃ diṭṭhiṃ appaṭinissajjitvā yathābhataṃ nikkhitto evaṃ niraye”ti. Evaṃ vutte, asibandhakaputto gāmaṇi bhagavantaṃ etadavoca– “abhikkantaṃ, bhante, abhikkantaṃ, bhante…pe… upāsakaṃ maṃ bhagavā dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṃ saraṇaṃ gatan”ti.
