如是我聞:一時佛在王舍城 迦蘭陀竹林


時彼城中有善鬪將,為聚落主,往詣佛所,頂禮佛足,問訊已訖,在一面坐,白佛言:

「世尊!我於昔者曾從宿舊耆老邊聞:『若欲戰時,要當莊嚴所持器仗,牢自防護,勇猛直進,無有怯弱,能破前敵,傷殺物命,使餘軍眾皆悉退散。作是事已,命終得生箭莊嚴天。』」

彼時鬪將作如是問。佛告之曰:

「止!不須說。汝於今者所問義趣,甚為不善。」

第二、第三亦如是問。佛復告言:

「汝已慇懃三問於我。汝若能受,當為汝說。諸有戰者,牢自莊嚴,善知鬪術,最為陣首,勇猛前進。如是戰將,豈不作意方便,欲得傷害彼諸軍眾,作是念言:『云何當繫縛於彼,傷害於彼,令其壞盡,寧可不生!』如是念耶?戰將!汝於眾生所起三邪惡業。何等名為三邪惡業?所謂即是身、口、意也。若以如是三不善 * 業,身壞命終,得生天者,無有是處。戰將!汝今若如是見者,即是邪見。邪見之業,必生二處:或在地獄,或墮畜生。」

爾時鬪將聞佛語已,悲泣流淚。佛復告曰:

「我以是故,三請不說。今為汝說,何故涕泣?」

時彼鬪將白佛言:

「世尊!我不為聞是說故而生悲惱。憐愍諸鬪戰者,長夜愚闇, * 孾孩無智,所作不善,常為此事,於未來世當受大苦!如是惡業而實不得生於天中。若以此業而生彼箭莊嚴天者,實無是處。世尊!我從今更不作於如是邪見。」

佛即讚言:

「善哉!善哉!汝所說者,甚為希有。」


爾時鬪將聞佛所說,頂禮還去。

如是我聞:一時佛住王舍城迦蘭陀竹園。


爾時戰鬪活聚落主來詣佛所,恭敬問訊。問訊已,退坐一面,白佛言:

「瞿曇!我聞古昔戰鬪活耆年宿士作是言:『若──戰鬪活!──身被重鎧,手執利器,將士先鋒,堪能方便,摧伏怨敵。緣此業報,生箭降伏天。』於瞿曇法中,其義云何?」

佛告戰鬪活:

「且止,莫問此義!」

如是再三問,亦再三止之,猶問不已。

佛告聚落主:

「我今問汝,隨汝意答。聚落主!於意云何?若──戰鬪活!──身被甲冑,為戰士先鋒,堪能方便摧伏怨敵。此人豈不先起傷害之心,欲攝縛枷鏁,斫刺殺害於彼耶?」

聚落主白佛:

「如是。世尊!」

佛告聚落主:

「為──戰鬪活!──有三種惡邪:若身、若口、若意。以此三種惡邪因緣,身壞命終,得生善趣箭降伏天者,無有是處!」

佛告聚落主:

「若古昔戰鬪活耆年宿士作如是見,作如是說:『若諸戰鬪活身被甲冑,手執利器,命敵先登,堪能方便摧伏怨敵,以是因緣生箭降伏天』者,是則邪見。邪見之人應生二處:若地獄趣,若畜生趣。」

說是語時,彼聚落主悲泣流淚。

佛告聚落主:

「以是義故,我先再三語汝:『且止,不為汝說!』」

聚落主白佛言:

「我不以瞿曇語故悲泣。我念古昔諸鬪戰活耆年宿士愚癡,不善,不辨,長夜欺誑,作如是言:『若戰鬪活身被甲冑,手執利器,命敵先登,(……乃至)得生箭降伏天。』是故悲泣。我今定思諸戰鬪活惡業因緣,身壞命終,生箭降伏天者,無有是處!瞿曇!我從今日捨諸惡業,歸佛、歸法、歸比丘僧。」

佛告聚落主:

「此真實要。」


時戰鬪活聚落主聞佛所說,歡喜隨喜。即從坐起,作禮而去。

Yodhājīvasuttaṃ

Atha kho yodhājīvo gāmaṇi yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā…pe… ekamantaṃ nisinno kho yodhājīvo gāmaṇi bhagavantaṃ etadavoca– “sutaṃ metaṃ, bhante, pubbakānaṃ ācariyapācariyānaṃ yodhājīvānaṃ bhāsamānānaṃ– ‘yo so yodhājīvo saṅgāme ussahati vāyamati, tamenaṃ ussahantaṃ vāyamantaṃ pare hananti pariyāpādenti, so kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā parajitānaṃ devānaṃ sahabyataṃ upapajjatī’ti. Idha bhagavā kimāhā”ti? “Alaṃ gāmaṇi, tiṭṭhatetaṃ; mā maṃ etaṃ pucchī”ti. Dutiyampi kho…pe… tatiyampi kho yodhājīvo gāmaṇi bhagavantaṃ etadavoca– “sutaṃ metaṃ, bhante, pubbakānaṃ ācariyapācariyānaṃ yodhājīvānaṃ bhāsamānānaṃ– ‘yo so yodhājīvo saṅgāme ussahati vāyamati, tamenaṃ ussahantaṃ vāyamantaṃ pare hananti pariyāpādenti, so kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā parajitānaṃ devānaṃ sahabyataṃ upapajjatī’ti. Idha bhagavā kimāhā”ti?

“Addhā kho tyāhaṃ, gāmaṇi, na labhāmi– ‘alaṃ, gāmaṇi, tiṭṭhatetaṃ; mā maṃ etaṃ pucchī’ti. Api ca tyāhaṃ byākarissāmi. Yo so, gāmaṇi, yodhājīvo saṅgāme ussahati vāyamati, tassa taṃ cittaṃ pubbe gahitaṃ [var] dukkaṭaṃ duppaṇihitaṃ– ‘ime sattā haññantu vā bajjhantu vā ucchijjantu vā vinassantu vā mā vā ahesuṃ iti vā’ti. Tamenaṃ ussahantaṃ vāyamantaṃ pare hananti pariyāpādenti; so kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā parajito nāma nirayo tattha upapajjatīti. Sace kho panassa evaṃ diṭṭhi hoti– ‘yo so yodhājīvo saṅgāme ussahati vāyamati tamenaṃ ussahantaṃ vāyamantaṃ pare hananti pariyāpādenti, so kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā parajitānaṃ devānaṃ sahabyataṃ upapajjatī’ti, sāssa hoti micchādiṭṭhi. Micchādiṭṭhikassa kho panāhaṃ, gāmaṇi, purisapuggalassa dvinnaṃ gatīnaṃ aññataraṃ gatiṃ vadāmi– nirayaṃ vā tiracchānayoniṃ vā”ti.

Evaṃ vutte, yodhājīvo gāmaṇi parodi, assūni pavattesi. “Etaṃ kho tyāhaṃ, gāmaṇi, nālatthaṃ– ‘alaṃ, gāmaṇi, tiṭṭhatetaṃ; mā maṃ etaṃ pucchī”’ti. “Nāhaṃ, bhante, etaṃ rodāmi yaṃ maṃ bhagavā evamāha apicāhaṃ, bhante, pubbakehi ācariyapācariyehi yodhājīvehi dīgharattaṃ nikato vañcito paluddho– ‘yo so yodhājīvo saṅgāme ussahati vāyamati, tamenaṃ ussahantaṃ vāyamantaṃ pare hananti pariyāpādenti, so kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā parajitānaṃ devānaṃ sahabyataṃ upapajjatī”’ti. “Abhikkantaṃ, bhante…pe… ajjatagge pāṇupetaṃ saraṇaṃ gatan”ti.
