如是我聞:一時佛在王舍城 迦蘭陀竹林


爾時犢子梵志往詣尊者大目連所,既到彼已,問訊尊者,在一面坐。爾時犢子梵志問目連曰:

「何因緣故,若沙門、婆羅門來問於佛:『死此生彼,……(乃至)非生非不生。』默然不答?其餘沙門、婆羅門若見有人來問難者,隨意為說。我昔曾問沙門瞿曇:『死此生彼。』默不見答。『死此不生彼;死此亦生彼,亦不生彼;非生彼,非不生彼。』悉不見答。如斯之義,其餘沙門、婆羅門皆悉答之。沙門瞿曇為何事故,默然不答?」

目連對曰:

「其餘沙門、婆羅門不知色從因生,不知色滅,不知色味,不知色過,不知色出要。以不能解如是義故著色:『我生彼色;我不生彼著色;我亦生彼,亦不生彼著色;我非生彼,非不生彼。』受、想、行、識,亦復如是。如來如實知色從因生,色從因滅,知色味,知色過,知色出要。如來如實知故,色生,彼心無取著,乃知色非生非不生,亦不取著。受、想、行、識,亦復如是。如斯之義,甚深無量,無有邊際,非算數所知,無有方處,亦無去來,寂滅無相。」


爾時犢子梵志聞尊者目連所說,歡喜奉行。

如是我聞:一時佛住王舍城 迦蘭陀竹園。爾時尊者大目揵連亦於彼住。


時有婆蹉種出家詣尊者大目揵連所,與尊者目揵連面相問訊慰勞,慰勞已,退坐一面,語尊者大目揵連:

「欲有所問,寧有閑暇見答以不?」

目連答言:

「婆蹉!隨意所問,知者當答。」

時婆蹉種出家問尊者目揵連:

「何因、何緣餘沙門、婆羅門有人求問『云何如來有後死、無後死、有無後死、非有非無後死』,皆悉隨答。而沙門瞿曇有來問言『如來有後死、無後死、有無後死、非有非無後死』,而不記說?」

目揵連言:

「婆蹉!餘沙門、婆羅門於色、色集、色滅、色味、色患、色出不如實知;不如實知故,於如來有後死則取著,如來無後死、有後死、有無後死、非有後死非無後死則生取著。受、想、行、識、識集、識滅、識味、識患、識出不如實知;不如實知故,於如來有後死生取著,無後死、有無後死、非有非無後死生取著。」

「如來者,於色如實知,色集、色滅、色味、色患、色出如實知;如實知故,於如來有後死則不著,無後死、有無後死、非有非無後死則不著。受、想、行、識如實知,識集、識滅、識味、識患、識出如實知;如實知故,於如來有後死則不然,無後死、有無後死、非有非無後死則不然。甚深廣大,無量無數,皆悉寂滅。」

「婆蹉!如是因、如是緣,餘沙門、婆羅門若有來問『如來有後死、無後死、有無後死、非有非無後死』,則為記說。如是因、如是緣,如來若有來問『如來有後死、無後死、有無後死、非有非無後死』,不為記說。」


時婆蹉種出家聞尊者大目揵連所說,歡喜隨喜,從座起而去。

Vacchagottasuttaṃ

Atha kho vacchagotto paribbājako yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṃ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sāraṇīyaṃ vītisāretvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho vacchagotto paribbājako bhagavantaṃ etadavoca–

“kiṃ nu kho, bho gotama, sassato loko”ti? Abyākataṃ kho etaṃ, vaccha, mayā– ‘sassato loko’ti…pe…. “Kiṃ pana, bho gotama, ‘neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṃ maraṇā”’ti? “Etampi kho, vaccha, abyākataṃ mayā– ‘neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṃ maraṇā”’ti.

“Ko nu kho, bho gotama, hetu, ko paccayo, yena aññatitthiyānaṃ paribbājakānaṃ evaṃ puṭṭhānaṃ evaṃ veyyākaraṇaṃ hoti– ‘sassato loko’ti vā…pe… ‘neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṃ maraṇā’ti vā? Ko pana, bho gotama, hetu, ko paccayo, yena bhoto gotamassa evaṃ puṭṭhassa na evaṃ veyyākaraṇaṃ hoti– ‘sassato loko’tipi…pe… ‘neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṃ maraṇā’tipī”ti?

“Aññatitthiyā kho, vaccha, paribbājakā rūpaṃ attato samanupassanti, rūpavantaṃ vā attānaṃ, attani vā rūpaṃ, rūpasmiṃ vā attānaṃ Vedanaṃ attato samanupassanti…pe… saññaṃ…pe… saṅkhāre…pe… viññāṇaṃ attato samanupassanti, viññāṇavantaṃ vā attānaṃ, attani vā viññāṇaṃ, viññāṇasmiṃ vā attānaṃ. Tasmā aññatitthiyānaṃ paribbājakānaṃ evaṃ puṭṭhānaṃ evaṃ veyyākaraṇaṃ hoti– ‘sassato loko’ti vā…pe… ‘neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṃ maraṇā’ti vā. Tathāgato ca kho, vaccha, arahaṃ sammāsambuddho na rūpaṃ attato samanupassati, na rūpavantaṃ vā attānaṃ, na attani vā rūpaṃ, na rūpasmiṃ vā attānaṃ. Na vedanaṃ attato samanupassati…pe… na saññaṃ…pe… na saṅkhāre…pe… na viññāṇaṃ attato samanupassati, na viññāṇavantaṃ vā attānaṃ, na attani vā viññāṇaṃ, na viññāṇasmiṃ vā attānaṃ. Atha kho vacchagotto paribbājako uṭṭhāyāsanā yenāyasmā mahāmoggallāno tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmatā mahāmoggallānena saddhiṃ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sāraṇīyaṃ vītisāretvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho vacchagotto paribbājako āyasmantaṃ mahāmoggallānaṃ etadavoca–

“kiṃ nu kho, bho moggallāna, sassato loko”ti? “Acchariyaṃ, bho moggallāna, abbhutaṃ, bho moggallāna! Yatra hi nāma satthu ca sāvakassa ca atthena attho byañjanena byañjanaṃ saṃsandissati, samessati, na virodhayissati, yadidaṃ aggapadasmiṃ. Idānāhaṃ, bho moggallāna, samaṇaṃ gotamaṃ upasaṅkamitvā etamatthaṃ apucchiṃ. Samaṇopi me gotamo etehi padehi etehi byañjanehi etamatthaṃ byākāsi, seyyathāpi bhavaṃ moggallāno. Acchariyaṃ, bho moggallāna, abbhutaṃ, bho moggallāna! Yatra hi nāma satthu ca sāvakassa ca atthena attho byañjanena byañjanaṃ saṃsandissati samessati na virodhayissati, yadidaṃ aggapadasmin”ti.
