如是我聞:一時佛在王舍城


爾時犢子梵志往詣佛所,問訊佛已,在一面坐,白佛言:

「瞿曇!我有少疑。若蒙聽察,乃敢發問!」

佛默然不答。第二、第三亦如是問,第二、第三佛亦默然。犢子言:

「瞿曇!我於長夜與汝親厚。我有少問,唯願答我!」

佛作是念:

「犢子梵志長夜已來稟性質直,無有諂偽。諸有所問,皆求解故,不為惱亂,吾當聽之。若阿毘曇、毘尼隨其所問。」

佛告犢子:

「恣汝所問。諸有所疑,無得疑難。」

犢子白佛言:

「瞿曇!一切世間有不善不?」

佛答言:

「有。」

又問:

「頗有善不?」

佛答言:

「有。」

犢子言:

「瞿曇!願為我說善、不善法,令我解了!」

佛告犢子:

「吾能多種說善、不善。今當為汝略說其要。」

* 佛復告犢子:

「欲為不善,離欲為善。瞋恚、愚癡是名不善,離瞋恚、癡是名為善。殺生不善,離殺為善。偷盜、邪婬、妄語、惡口、 * 兩舌、貪、恚、邪見是名不善,離如是等,正見為善。吾為汝說三種不善,三種善;十種不善,十種善。」

復告犢子:

「若我弟子解此三種善、不善及十種善、不善,如實能知,便能盡欲。瞋恚、愚癡亦能永盡。貪欲諸惡,都滅無餘。能盡貪欲、愚癡故,諸欲漏都盡。以盡漏故,成就無漏、心得解脫、慧得解脫。於 * 見法中自身解了,證知得法,自知生盡,梵行已立,所作已辦,更不受有。」

犢子白佛:

「頗有一比丘,於佛教法成就無漏、心得解脫、慧得解脫?於 * 見法中自身解了,證知得法,自知生盡,梵行已立,所作已辦,更不受有。為有是不?」

佛告犢子:

「得是法者,不但一、二及以三、四,乃至五百。多有比丘,心得解脫、慧得解脫,於現法中自身取證。」

犢子復問:

「佛教法中頗有一比丘尼,心得解脫、慧得解脫不?」

佛告犢子:

「我教法中比丘尼等得斯法者,非一、二、三,乃至五百。其數眾多。」

犢子又問:

「除彼比丘及比丘尼,頗有一優婆塞,度疑彼岸以不?」

佛告犢子:

「我佛法中諸優婆塞度疑彼岸,非一、二、三,乃至五百。其數眾多。斷五下分結,成阿那含,不還欲界。」

犢子又問:

「除比丘、比丘尼修梵行者,除優婆塞,頗有一優婆夷,除於疑悔,度疑彼岸不?」

佛告犢子:

「我佛法中得斯法者,非一、二、三,乃至五百。其數眾多。斷五下分結,成阿那含,不還欲界。」

犢子梵志復白佛言:

「置比丘、比丘尼并優婆塞、優婆夷修梵行者,是佛法中頗有優婆塞,獨在居家,受五欲樂,度疑彼岸不?」

佛告犢子:

「是佛法中非一、二、三,乃至五百。其數眾多。如斯等人乃與男女群居,逼迮共住,香華瓔珞,著細繒衣,用好旃檀,眾妙雜香以塗其身,受畜金銀,種種珍寶,奴婢僮僕,其數眾多,處斯憒閙,逼隘之中,能斷三結,得須陀洹。決定必至於三菩提,盡諸苦際。極鈍根者,任運七生,不 * 至三惡,人天流轉,自然得盡諸苦邊際。」

犢子又問:

「且置比丘、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷修梵行者,又置優婆塞,在欲得須陀洹。頗有女人,在佛教法作優婆夷,在於欲中度疑彼岸者不?」

佛告犢子:

「我佛法中諸優婆夷在欲度疑,非一、二、三,乃至五百。其數眾多。諸優婆夷雖處居家,如優婆塞,斷於三結,得須陀洹。」

犢子言:

「瞿曇!汝於菩提已得正覺。設當修梵行,比丘、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷、處欲優婆塞、處欲優婆夷,若如是等不具道行,便為支不滿足。」

犢子言:

「瞿曇!汝今既得成等正覺,得果比丘、比丘尼修梵行,優婆塞、優婆夷、處欲優婆塞、處欲優婆夷,悉獲果證。於佛教法是名具足。」

犢子復言:

「瞿曇!我今樂說譬喻。願聽我說!」

佛告之曰:

「隨汝意說。」

「譬如天降大雨,隨下水流,注于大海。汝之教法,亦復如是。男女長幼及以衰老蒙佛法雨,於長夜中盡趣涅槃。善哉,瞿曇!善哉,妙法!善哉,能入佛教法者!」

犢子言:

「我今相問:設得出家修梵行者,為久近成?」

佛告犢子:

「若有外道異學,於佛法中求出家者,先剃其鬚髮,滿足四月,於眾僧中心意調濡,然後受戒。不必盡爾,亦隨人心。」

犢子梵志聞佛語已,心生喜樂:

「若蒙出家,得受戒者,假 * 設四年,我尚為之,況四月也。」

佛告犢子:

「吾先為汝說二種人,不必一切悉皆如是。」

犢子言:

「瞿曇!先者實作是說。」

佛告比丘:

「汝等今者與彼犢子剃髮、受戒。」

爾時比丘受佛勅已,即剃其髮并與受戒。如比丘法,尊者犢子精勤修道,於半月中具於學地,知法到法,見法覺法。既得學果,知已解已,得 * 證法已。尊者犢子作是念:

「我今應詣佛所。」

作是念已,即往佛所,頂禮佛足,在一面立,白佛言:

「世尊!我於學地都證知已。唯願世尊重為我說,令我聞法,心得解脫!」

佛告犢子:

「汝若速求心得解脫,應修二法,當學二法,增廣二法,言二法者,所謂智、定。若能如是修習增廣,是則名為知種種界,通達諸界,知無數界。」

佛告犢子比丘:

「若欲離欲,惡不善者,有覺有觀,入於初禪,如是比丘應修二法──定及智慧,乃至四禪、慈、悲、喜、捨、空處、識處、不用處、非想非非想處,亦復如是。犢子!欲得須陀洹、斯陀含、阿那含者,悉皆應學如是二法。欲學身通,欲知他心智,欲知宿命,欲得天眼、耳,欲得漏盡智,應修二法,增廣二法,知種種界,通達諸界,知無數界。」

尊者犢子聞佛所說,歡喜頂禮而去。大悲如來種種因緣教導,犢子受佛教已,於閑靜處獨坐精懃,心不放逸,常處禪定。所以族姓子剃除鬚髮,正欲為 * 修無上梵行故,於現法中自身取證,我生已盡,梵行已立,所作已辦,更不受有。時眾多比丘往至佛所。爾時尊者犢子見諸比丘,即問之言:

「汝等欲何所至?」

比丘答言:

「我等將詣佛所,親近供養。」

犢子比丘語諸比丘言:

「汝等今者往至佛所,因以我語問訊世尊:『起居輕利,少病少惱』,并可為我白世尊言:『犢子比丘已報佛恩,為法供養,順佛所行。』」

時眾多比丘往至佛所,禮佛足已,在一面坐,白佛言:

「世尊!尊者犢子比丘稽首世尊足下,問訊世尊:『起居輕利,少病少惱。』犢子比丘又作是言:『為我白佛:我已修行,隨順佛說。世尊所行,我已具得。』」

佛告比丘:

「先汝有天來至我所言:『犢子比丘已得羅漢。』我已先知,天在後 * 導。汝等今者復在天後。」

爾時世尊記彼犢子已成羅漢。


佛說是已,諸比丘聞佛所說,歡喜奉行。

如是我聞:一時佛住王舍城 迦蘭陀竹園


時有婆蹉種出家來詣佛所,與世尊面相慰勞已,退坐一面,白佛言:

「瞿曇!欲有所問,寧有閑暇為解說不?」

爾時世尊默然而住。婆蹉種出家第二、第三問,佛亦第二、第三默然而住。時婆蹉種出家白佛言:

「我與瞿曇共相隨順,今有所問,何故默然?」

爾時世尊作是念:

「此婆蹉種出家長夜質直,不諂不偽,時有所問,皆以不知故,非故惱亂,我今當以阿毘曇律納受於彼。」

作是念已,告婆蹉種出家:

「隨汝所問,當為解說。」

婆蹉白佛:

「云何,瞿曇!有善法耶?」

佛答言:

「有。」

婆蹉白佛:

「當為我說善、不善法,令我得解。」

佛告婆蹉:

「我今當為汝略說善、不善法。諦聽!善思!婆蹉!貪欲者是不善法,調伏貪欲是則善法;瞋恚、愚癡是不善法,調伏恚、癡是則善法。殺生者是不善法,離殺生者是則善法;偷盜、邪婬、妄語、兩舌、惡口、綺語、貪、恚、邪見是不善法,不盜……乃至正見是則善法,是為,婆蹉!我今已說三種善法、三種不善法。如是,聖弟子於三種善法、三種不善法如實知,十種不善法、不種善法如實知者,則於貪欲無餘滅盡,瞋恚、愚癡無餘滅盡者,則於一切有漏滅盡,無漏心解脫、慧解脫,現法自知作證:我生已盡,梵行已立,所作已作,自知不受後有。」

婆蹉白佛:

「頗有一比丘於此法、律得盡有漏,無漏心解脫,……乃至不受後有耶?」

佛告婆蹉:

「不但若一,若二、若三,乃至五百,有眾多比丘於此法、律盡諸有漏,……乃至不受後有。」

婆蹉白佛:

「且置比丘,有一比丘尼於此法、律盡諸有漏,……乃至不受後有不?」

佛告婆蹉:

「不但一、二、三比丘尼,乃至五百,有眾多比丘尼於此法、律盡諸有漏,……乃至不受後有。」

婆蹉白佛:

「置比丘尼,有一優婆塞修諸梵行,於此法、律度狐疑不?」

佛告婆蹉:

「不但一、二、三,乃至五百優婆塞,乃有眾多優婆塞修諸梵行,於此法、律斷五下分結,得成阿那含,不復還生此。」

婆蹉白佛:

「復置優婆塞,頗有一優婆夷於此法、律修持梵行,於此法、律度狐疑不?」

佛告婆蹉:

「不但一、二、三優婆夷,乃至五百,乃有眾多優婆夷於此法、律斷五下分結,於彼化生,得阿那含,不復還生此。」

婆蹉白佛:

「置比丘、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷修梵行者,頗有優婆塞受五欲,而於此法、律度狐疑不?」

佛告婆蹉:

「不但一、二、三,乃至五百,乃有眾多優婆塞居家妻子,香華嚴飾,畜養奴婢,於此法、律斷三結,貪、恚、癡薄,得斯陀含,一往一來,究竟苦邊。」

婆蹉白佛:

「復置優婆塞,頗有一優婆夷受習五欲,於此法、律得度狐疑不?」

佛告婆蹉:

「不但一、二、三,乃至五百,乃有眾多優婆夷在於居家,畜養男女,服習五欲,華香嚴飾,於此法、律三結盡,得須陀洹,不墮惡趣法,決定正向三菩提,七有天人往生,究竟苦邊。」

婆蹉白佛言:

「瞿曇!若沙門瞿曇成等正覺,若比丘、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷修梵行者,及優婆塞、優婆夷服習五欲,不得如是功德者,則不滿足;以沙門瞿曇成等正覺,比丘、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷修諸梵行,及優婆塞、優婆夷服習五欲,而成就爾所功德故,則為滿足。瞿曇!今當說譬。」

佛告婆蹉:

「隨意所說。」

婆蹉白佛:

「如天大雨,水流隨下,瞿曇法、律亦復如是;比丘、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷,若男、若女,悉皆隨流,向於涅槃,浚輸涅槃。甚奇!佛、法、僧平等法、律。為餘異道出家來詣瞿曇所,於正法、律求出家、受具足者,幾時便聽出家?」

佛告婆蹉:

「若餘異道出家欲來於正法、律求出家、受具足者,乃至四月於和尚所受依而住,然此是為人粗作齊限耳。」

婆蹉白佛:

「若諸異道出家來於正法、律欲求出家、受具足,聽於和尚所受依,若滿四月聽出家者,我今堪能於四月在和尚所受依。若於正法、律而得出家、受具足,我當於瞿曇法中出家、受具足,修持梵行。」

佛告婆蹉:

「我先不說粗為人作分齊耶?」

婆蹉白佛:

「如是,瞿曇!」

爾時世尊告諸比丘:

「汝等當度彼婆蹉出家於正法、律出家、受具足。」

婆蹉種出家即得於正法、律出家、受具足,成比丘分。乃至半月,學所應知、應識、應見、應得、應覺、應證,悉知、悉識、悉見、悉得、悉覺、悉證如來正法。

尊者婆蹉作是念:

「我今已覺所應知、應識、應見、應得、應覺、應證,彼一切悉知、悉識、悉見、悉得、悉覺、悉證,今當往見世尊。」

是時婆蹉詣世尊所,稽首禮足,於一面住,白佛言:

「世尊!我於學所應知、應識、應見、應得、應覺、應證,悉知、悉識、悉見、悉得、悉覺、悉證世尊正法。唯願世尊為我說法,我聞法已,當獨一靜處,專精思惟,不放逸住,思惟:所以善男子剃除鬚髮,著袈裟衣,正信出家學道,……乃至自知不受後有。」

佛告婆蹉:

「有二法,修習多修習,所謂止、觀。此二法修習多修習,得知界、果,覺了於界,知種種界,覺種種界。如是,比丘!欲求離欲,惡不善法,……乃至第四禪具足住,慈、悲、喜、捨,空入處、識入處、無所有入處、非想非非想入處,令我三結盡,得須陀洹;三結盡,貪、恚、癡薄,得斯陀含;五下分結盡,得阿那含;種種神通境界,天眼、天耳、他心智、宿命智、生死智、漏盡智皆悉得。是故,比丘!當修二法,修習多修習;修二法故,知種種界,……乃至漏盡。」

爾時尊者婆蹉聞佛所說,歡喜作禮而去。爾時婆蹉獨一靜處,專精思惟,不放逸住,……乃至自知不受後有。

時有眾多比丘莊嚴方便,欲詣世尊恭敬供養。爾時婆蹉問眾多比丘:

「汝等莊嚴方便,欲詣世尊恭敬供養耶?」

諸比丘答言:

「爾。」

爾時婆蹉語諸比丘:

「尊者!持我語,敬禮世尊,問訊起居輕利,少病少惱,安樂住不?言:『婆蹉比丘白世尊言:「我已供養世尊,具足奉事,令歡悅,非不歡悅;大師弟子所作皆悉已作,供養大師,令歡悅,非不歡悅。」』」

時眾多比丘往詣佛所,稽首禮足,退坐一面,白佛言:

「世尊!尊者婆蹉稽首敬禮世尊足,……乃至歡悅,非不歡悅。」

佛告諸比丘:

「諸天先已語我,汝今復說。如來成就第一知見,亦如婆蹉比丘,有如是德力。」

爾時世尊為彼婆蹉比丘說第一記。


佛說此經已,諸比丘聞佛所說,歡喜奉行!

Mahāvacchasuttaṃ

Evaṃ me sutaṃ– ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe. Atha kho vacchagotto paribbājako yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṃ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sāraṇīyaṃ vītisāretvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho vacchagotto paribbājako bhagavantaṃ etadavoca–

“dīgharattāhaṃ bhotā gotamena sahakathī. Sādhu me bhavaṃ gotamo saṃkhittena kusalākusalaṃ desetū”ti. “Saṃkhittenapi kho te ahaṃ, vaccha, kusalākusalaṃ deseyyaṃ, vitthārenapi kho te ahaṃ, vaccha, kusalākusalaṃ deseyyaṃ; api ca te ahaṃ, vaccha, saṃkhittena kusalākusalaṃ desessāmi. Taṃ suṇāhi, sādhukaṃ manasi karohi, bhāsissāmī”ti. “Evaṃ, bho”ti kho vacchagotto paribbājako bhagavato paccassosi. Bhagavā etadavoca–

“Lobho kho, vaccha, akusalaṃ, alobho kusalaṃ; doso kho, vaccha, akusalaṃ, adoso kusalaṃ; moho kho, vaccha, akusalaṃ, amoho kusalaṃ. Iti kho, vaccha, ime tayo dhammā akusalā, tayo dhammā kusalā.

“Pāṇātipāto kho, vaccha, akusalaṃ, pāṇātipātā veramaṇī kusalaṃ; adinnādānaṃ kho, vaccha, akusalaṃ, adinnādānā veramaṇī kusalaṃ; kāmesumicchācāro kho, vaccha, akusalaṃ, kāmesumicchācārā veramaṇī kusalaṃ; musāvādo kho, vaccha, akusalaṃ, musāvādā veramaṇī kusalaṃ; pisuṇā vācā kho, vaccha, akusalaṃ pisuṇāya vācāya veramaṇī kusalaṃ; pharusā vācā kho, vaccha, akusalaṃ, pharusāya vācāya veramaṇī kusalaṃ; samphappalāpo kho, vaccha, akusalaṃ, samphappalāpā veramaṇī kusalaṃ; abhijjhā kho, vaccha, akusalaṃ, anabhijjhā kusalaṃ; byāpādo kho, vaccha, akusalaṃ, abyāpādo kusalaṃ; micchādiṭṭhi kho, vaccha, akusalaṃ sammādiṭṭhi kusalaṃ. Iti kho, vaccha, ime dasa dhammā akusalā, dasa dhammā kusalā.

“Yato kho, vaccha, bhikkhuno taṇhā pahīnā hoti ucchinnamūlā tālāvatthukatā anabhāvaṃkatā āyatiṃ anuppādadhammā, so hoti bhikkhu arahaṃ khīṇāsavo vusitavā katakaraṇīyo ohitabhāro anuppattasadattho parikkhīṇabhavasaṃyojano sammadaññā vimutto”ti.

“Tiṭṭhatu bhavaṃ gotamo. Atthi pana te bhoto gotamassa ekabhikkhupi sāvako yo āsavānaṃ khayā [var] anāsavaṃ cetovimuttiṃ paññāvimuttiṃ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṃ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharatī”ti? “Na kho, vaccha, ekaṃyeva sataṃ na dve satāni na tīṇi satāni na cattāri satāni na pañca satāni, atha kho bhiyyova ye bhikkhū mama sāvakā āsavānaṃ khayā anāsavaṃ cetovimuttiṃ paññāvimuttiṃ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṃ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharantī”ti.

“Tiṭṭhatu bhavaṃ gotamo, tiṭṭhantu bhikkhū. “Sace hi, bho gotama, imaṃ dhammaṃ bhavaṃyeva gotamo ārādhako abhavissa, no ca kho bhikkhū ārādhakā abhavissaṃsu evamidaṃ brahmacariyaṃ aparipūraṃ abhavissa tenaṅgena. Yasmā ca kho, bho gotama, imaṃ dhammaṃ bhavañceva gotamo ārādhako bhikkhū ca ārādhakā; evamidaṃ brahmacariyaṃ paripūraṃ tenaṅgena.

“Sace hi, bho gotama, imaṃ dhammaṃ bhavañceva gotamo ārādhako abhavissa, bhikkhū ca ārādhakā abhavissaṃsu, no ca kho bhikkhuniyo ārādhikā abhavissaṃsu; evamidaṃ brahmacariyaṃ aparipūraṃ abhavissa tenaṅgena. Yasmā ca kho, bho gotama, imaṃ dhammaṃ bhavañceva gotamo ārādhako, bhikkhū ca ārādhakā, bhikkhuniyo ca ārādhikā; evamidaṃ brahmacariyaṃ paripūraṃ tenaṅgena.

“Seyyathāpi, bho gotama, gaṅgā nadī samuddaninnā samuddapoṇā samuddapabbhārā samuddaṃ āhacca tiṭṭhati, evamevāyaṃ bhoto gotamassa parisā sagahaṭṭhapabbajitā nibbānaninnā nibbānapoṇā nibbānapabbhārā nibbānaṃ āhacca tiṭṭhati. Abhikkantaṃ, bho gotama…pe… esāhaṃ bhavantaṃ gotamaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi dhammañca bhikkhusaṅghañca. Labheyyāhaṃ bhoto gotamassa santike pabbajjaṃ, labheyyaṃ upasampadan”ti “Yo kho, vaccha, aññatitthiyapubbo imasmiṃ dhammavinaye ākaṅkhati pabbajjaṃ, ākaṅkhati upasampadaṃ, so cattāro māse parivasati. Catunnaṃ māsānaṃ accayena āraddhacittā bhikkhū pabbājenti upasampādenti bhikkhubhāvāya; api ca mettha puggalavemattatā viditā”ti. “Sace, bhante, aññatitthiyapubbā imasmiṃ dhammavinaye ākaṅkhantā pabbajjaṃ, ākaṅkhantā upasampadaṃ cattāro māse parivasanti, catunnaṃ māsānaṃ accayena āraddhacittā bhikkhū pabbājenti upasampādenti bhikkhubhāvāya; ahaṃ cattāri vassāni parivasissāmi. Catunnaṃ vassānaṃ accayena āraddhacittā bhikkhū pabbājentu upasampādentu bhikkhubhāvāyā”ti. Alattha kho vacchagotto paribbājako bhagavato santike pabbajjaṃ alattha upasampadaṃ.

Acirūpasampanno kho panāyasmā vacchagotto addhamāsūpasampanno yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho āyasmā vacchagotto bhagavantaṃ etadavoca– “yāvatakaṃ, bhante, sekhena ñāṇena sekhāya vijjāya pattabbaṃ, anuppattaṃ taṃ mayā; uttari ca me [var] bhagavā dhammaṃ desetū”ti. “Tena hi tvaṃ, vaccha, dve dhamme uttari bhāvehi– samathañca vipassanañca. Ime kho te, vaccha, dve dhammā uttari bhāvitā– samatho ca vipassanā ca– anekadhātupaṭivedhāya saṃvattissanti.

“So tvaṃ, vaccha, yāvadeva [var] ākaṅkhissasi– ‘anekavihitaṃ iddhividhaṃ paccanubhaveyyaṃ– ekopi hutvā bahudhā assaṃ, bahudhāpi hutvā eko assaṃ; āvibhāvaṃ, tirobhāvaṃ; tirokuṭṭaṃ tiropākāraṃ tiropabbataṃ asajjamāno gaccheyyaṃ, seyyathāpi ākāse; pathaviyāpi ummujjanimujjaṃ kareyyaṃ, seyyathāpi udake; udakepi abhijjamāne gaccheyyaṃ, seyyathāpi pathaviyaṃ; ākāsepi pallaṅkena kameyyaṃ, seyyathāpi pakkhī sakuṇo; imepi candimasūriye evaṃmahiddhike evaṃmahānubhāve pāṇinā parimaseyyaṃ, parimajjeyyaṃ; yāvabrahmalokāpi kāyena vasaṃ vatteyyan’ti, tatra tatreva sakkhibhabbataṃ pāpuṇissasi, sati sati-āyatane.

“So tvaṃ, vaccha, yāvadeva ākaṅkhissasi– ‘dibbāya sotadhātuyā visuddhāya atikkantamānusikāya ubho sadde suṇeyyaṃ– dibbe ca mānuse ca, ye dūre santike cā’ti, tatra tatreva sakkhibhabbataṃ pāpuṇissasi, sati sati-āyatane.

“So tvaṃ, vaccha, yāvadeva ākaṅkhissasi– ‘parasattānaṃ parapuggalānaṃ cetasā ceto paricca pajāneyyaṃ– sarāgaṃ vā cittaṃ sarāgaṃ cittanti pajāneyyaṃ, vītarāgaṃ vā cittaṃ vītarāgaṃ cittanti pajāneyyaṃ; sadosaṃ vā cittaṃ sadosaṃ cittanti pajāneyyaṃ, vītadosaṃ vā cittaṃ vītadosaṃ cittanti pajāneyyaṃ; samohaṃ vā cittaṃ samohaṃ cittanti pajāneyyaṃ, vītamohaṃ vā cittaṃ vītamohaṃ cittanti pajāneyyaṃ; saṃkhittaṃ vā cittaṃ saṃkhittaṃ cittanti pajāneyyaṃ, vikkhittaṃ vā cittaṃ vikkhittaṃ cittanti pajāneyyaṃ; mahaggataṃ vā cittaṃ mahaggataṃ cittanti pajāneyyaṃ, amahaggataṃ vā cittaṃ amahaggataṃ cittanti pajāneyyaṃ; sa-uttaraṃ vā cittaṃ sa-uttaraṃ cittanti pajāneyyaṃ, anuttaraṃ vā cittaṃ anuttaraṃ cittanti pajāneyyaṃ; samāhitaṃ vā cittaṃ samāhitaṃ cittanti pajāneyyaṃ, asamāhitaṃ vā cittaṃ asamāhitaṃ cittanti pajāneyyaṃ; vimuttaṃ vā cittaṃ vimuttaṃ cittanti pajāneyyaṃ, avimuttaṃ vā cittaṃ avimuttaṃ cittanti pajāneyyan’ti, tatra tatreva sakkhibhabbataṃ pāpuṇissasi, sati sati-āyatane.

“So tvaṃ, vaccha, yāvadeva ākaṅkhissasi– ‘anekavihitaṃ pubbenivāsaṃ anussareyyaṃ, seyyathidaṃ– ekampi jātiṃ dvepi jātiyo tissopi jātiyo catassopi jātiyo pañcapi jātiyo dasapi jātiyo vīsampi jātiyo tiṃsampi jātiyo cattālīsampi jātiyo paññāsampi jātiyo jātisatampi jātisahassampi jātisatasahassampi; anekepi saṃvaṭṭakappe anekepi vivaṭṭakappe anekepi saṃvaṭṭavivaṭṭakappe– amutrāsiṃ evaṃnāmo evaṃgotto evaṃvaṇṇo evamāhāro evaṃsukhadukkhappaṭisaṃvedī evamāyupariyanto, so tato cuto amutra udapādiṃ; tatrāpāsiṃ evaṃnāmo evaṃgotto evaṃvaṇṇo evamāhāro evaṃsukhadukkhappaṭisaṃvedī evamāyupariyanto, so tato cuto idhūpapannoti; iti sākāraṃ sa-uddesaṃ anekavihitaṃ pubbenivāsaṃ anussareyyan’ti, tatra tatreva sakkhibhabbataṃ pāpuṇissasi, sati sati-āyatane.

“So tvaṃ, vaccha, yāvadeva ākaṅkhissasi– ‘dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena satte passeyyaṃ cavamāne upapajjamāne hīne paṇīte suvaṇṇe dubbaṇṇe sugate duggate yathākammūpage satte pajāneyyaṃ– ime vata bhonto sattā kāyaduccaritena samannāgatā vacīduccaritena samannāgatā manoduccaritena samannāgatā ariyānaṃ upavādakā micchādiṭṭhikā micchādiṭṭhikammasamādānā, te kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā apāyaṃ duggatiṃ vinipātaṃ nirayaṃ upapannā; ime vā pana bhonto sattā kāyasucaritena samannāgatā vacīsucaritena samannāgatā manosucaritena samannāgatā ariyānaṃ anupavādakā sammādiṭṭhikā sammādiṭṭhikammasamādānā, te kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā sugatiṃ saggaṃ lokaṃ upapannāti; iti dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena satte passeyyaṃ cavamāne upapajjamāne hīne paṇīte suvaṇṇe dubbaṇṇe sugate duggate yathākammūpage satte pajāneyyan’ti, tatra tatreva sakkhibhabbataṃ pāpuṇissasi, sati sati-āyatane.

“So tvaṃ, vaccha, yāvadeva ākaṅkhissasi– ‘āsavānaṃ khayā anāsavaṃ cetovimuttiṃ paññāvimuttiṃ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṃ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihareyyan’ti, tatra tatreva sakkhibhabbataṃ pāpuṇissasi, sati sati-āyatane”ti.

Atha kho āyasmā vacchagotto bhagavato bhāsitaṃ abhinanditvā anumoditvā uṭṭhāyāsanā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṃ katvā pakkāmi. Atha kho āyasmā vacchagotto eko vūpakaṭṭho appamatto ātāpī pahitatto viharanto nacirasseva– yassatthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajanti tadanuttaraṃ– brahmacariyapariyosānaṃ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṃ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihāsi. ‘Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṃ brahmacariyaṃ, kataṃ karaṇīyaṃ, nāparaṃ itthattāyā’ti abbhaññāsi. Aññataro kho panāyasmā vacchagotto arahataṃ ahosi.

Tena kho pana samayena sambahulā bhikkhū bhagavantaṃ dassanāya gacchanti. Addasā kho āyasmā vacchagotto te bhikkhū dūratova āgacchante. Disvāna yena te bhikkhū tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā te bhikkhū etadavoca “handa! Kahaṃ pana tumhe āyasmanto gacchathā”ti? “Bhagavantaṃ kho mayaṃ, āvuso, dassanāya gacchāmā”ti “Tenahāyasmanto mama vacanena bhagavato pāde sirasā vandatha, evañca vadetha– ‘vacchagotto, bhante, bhikkhu bhagavato pāde sirasā vandati, evañca vadeti– pariciṇṇo me bhagavā, pariciṇṇo me sugato”’ti. “Evamāvuso”ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato vacchagottassa paccassosuṃ. Atha kho te bhikkhū yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṃsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdiṃsu. Ekamantaṃ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū bhagavantaṃ etadavocuṃ– “āyasmā, bhante, vacchagotto bhagavato pāde sirasā vandati, evañca vadeti– ‘pariciṇṇo me bhagavā, pariciṇṇo me sugato”’ti. “Pubbeva me, bhikkhave, vacchagotto bhikkhu cetasā ceto paricca vidito– ‘tevijjo vacchagotto bhikkhu mahiddhiko mahānubhāvo’ti. Devatāpi me etamatthaṃ ārocesuṃ– ‘tevijjo, bhante, vacchagotto bhikkhu mahiddhiko mahānubhāvo”’ti.

Idamavoca bhagavā. Attamanā te bhikkhū bhagavato bhāsitaṃ abhinandunti.
